About Kliptown Youth Program

Kliptown Child Writing - small

Kliptown Youth Program’s mission is to eradicate poverty of mind, body, and soul and to fight against the disadvantages imposed on the children of Kliptown, by providing educational support and positive activities to engage in after school.  It seeks to develop young and dynamic individuals who are willing to contribute effectively for the betterment of their communities.

KYP’s tutoring, athletic, and arts programs provide a life to the children of Kliptown defined not by survival, but instead by the ability to be active community members, to have dreams, and most of all to create hope about the future.

KYP Programs

Support a Child

It costs between $100-$200 per year for a child to attend school in South Africa.  The cost of school fees, uniforms, books, supplies, and field trips may not be much by some people’s standards, but they are a significant barrier for many children in Kliptown.  You can help provide the resources to allow KYP to ensure that all members are able to attend school.

Tutoring program

The tutoring program runs Monday-Thursday afternoons and helps primary and secondary school students get the help they need to thrive in school.  Particular focus is given to high school students to help them prepare for their important matriculation exams, which they “write” at the end of their senior year.  KYP is enormously proud to report that every student in the classes of 2008 and 2009 who attended the tutoring sessions passed their matrics!

Tertiary education program

Because of the success of the tutoring program, many KYP members are well prepared for university and eager attend.  The tertiary education program provides funds to successful students who need as, but wouldn’t be able to attend without financial support.

Arts and culture

KYP’s dancers are exceptionally talented.  They perform at home in Kliptown and as far away as France.  Each group develops its own dances and range from traditional African dance, to gumboots, to hip hop.

Athletics

The KYP members on the soccer and netball teams are determined competitors.  There are 3 soccer teams and 2 netball teams, all of whom compete locally for KYP pride!

Food

This year, KYP began a food program to help ensure children aren’t hungry as they settle down to their school work.  With food prices rising steeply in South Africa, many are going hungry, and families can’t keep up.  The food program provides snacks and meals for KYP members and makes an enormous difference.

Stipends / Professional Development

The incredible people who make every day possible at KYP have dedicated themselves to helping their community.  In order to make it possible for them to continue their amazing work supporting Kliptown’s students, KYP supports the leadership team with stipends.  In addition, leadership training and development is a part of being a member of the committee, and all seek to build their skills no matter what program or facet of KYP’s work they oversee.
