About Equal Education

Equal Education works and campaigns for educational quality and equality in South African schools. Equal Education works to realise the right to education in  our Constitution. This means that all young South Africans must receive a quality education.

This will require improvements to the physical conditions under which learners learn and teachers teach, to the availability of materials that support learning and teaching, to the practice and content of teaching, to the commitment and passion for education of both learners and teachers, and to the ability of the public education system to efficiently administer and support schools.

Equal Education believes that achieving equity and quality will require not only improved delivery by government, but also a community-based approach that can support each school. We also believe that, as evidenced by the past 14 years, certain well-intentioned reforms can have negative outcomes; thus all policy must be informed by the best available evidence.

Our organisation therefore combines a strong commitment to research and policy, with an equally strong commitment to grassroots community organisation. Our membership consists of learners, teachers, parents, school administrators, community members and concerned citizens of all ages and classes. Our work therefore includes ongoing and regular community meeting with learners, teachers and parents.

Central to our membership are learners themselves. They have a crucial role to play in building a culture of learning, and in building a democratic society where citizens enjoy their socio-economic rights.

We are presently based in Khayelitsha, a township of 600,000 people that is part of the Cape Town Metropole in the Western Cape. We intend working in other parts of the province and the country.
